Sense of Unease Is Growing = CPI ain't what it used to be

This article suggests that IF we look at the CPI, post RE collapse, we will see that when core CPI with shelter looked like it was collapsing, core CPI without shelter was increasing. However, in the last year or so, BOTH have been declining, but from different heights.

The point still is that "housing" drove core CPI down, without housing core CPI was still trending up, until last year.
